OK.  That picture is NOT me.  But I had surgery one time and didn’t shave until I was up and about normally.  I can grow that beard and mustache…

I love the game of Hockey. From my introduction by watching every minute of the 1980 Olympics, to first getting cable TV and watching the Rangers on MSG Cable, to road trips with Dad for my first game in McNichols Arena, the old Checkerdome and across Dallas to see the Blackhawks play, I have loved this sport.  I can open the door to a building and smell the crisp, clean smell of the ice (away from the benches, of course) and feel if the building’s humidity is going to turn the game chippy before the security folks are done wanding me. In short, I L-O-V-E it.

And then, being a late bloomer in this regard, I married my wonderful wife, complete with instant family of one daughter and two boys.  The boys are sold on Hockey.  They were easy.  I tread lightly introducing the wife to it and was pleased to find she is fan as well.  (The teenage daughter is fine going to games because there are boys to look at there.  It's a start...) This love of the game is a great connection I have shared with my brothers for decades, and now with my own family (as much as the military mission allows) that I hope to have carry on for a long, long time.

So I am looking forward to showing the Mrs. that focused, insightful analysis and discussion of the NHL is time well spent.  Along with my co-Managing Directors, I will bring you unique analysis of the NHL that paints an accurate playoff picture long before most analysts do.

So throw down the Gatorade bottle, grab your stick, leap over the boards and get that shot On Goal We are already out on the ice and analyzing the NHL for you…

As fans, we all remember our first real contact with Hockey.  I grew up near Washington DC.  As a young child, my father took me to see the Capitals play one night.  Like you, I was hooked on this game.  And then came 1980.

Like so many fans my age in the United States, I was Miracle minted.  The next day I had the idea to gather some of my childhood friends.  We collected some fallen branches and broke them into the general shape of a Hockey stick.  We smacked around a crushed soda can in the streets in summer and on the frozen creeks in winter.  Hockey, to this day, is the game I care most about.

As I grew, I found so much to admire about this sport.  Consider the age of Lord Stanley’s Cup and the respect it commands.  Note the good people who play this game and understand success is won as a team.

In college, I began playing in-line Hockey.  Later, I recruited friends to join my newly formed team and worked with others to start the first organized amateur in-line Hockey league in Austin, TX.  Some of my friends at the time (who are still at it but now play on the many ice rinks that have since moved to town!) did not even know how to skate, much less play the game.

But Hockey has its way of getting under the skin.  We all remember our first experience with Hockey and we know it’s about the passion. I have done my best to share and spread this enthusiasm for the game with most I know.  My friends and family would tell you I am an ambassador for Hockey.  I hope to serve the game well.

So grab a stick (any stick will do), I’ll crush the can, and let’s put it On Goal.

“I tried to capture the spirit of the thing.”

                                                                --Dickie Dunn

I was born near the future Hockey hotbed of Dallas, Texas, in 1971.  During my early childhood, I was fully indoctrinated into the religion that is Texas Football.  On February 22, 1980, I witnessed a Miracle and was born again.  Since that glorious day, I have been an unwavering member of the First Church of the Faceoff.

I played (what the Canadians call) road Hockey from the age of nine through high school. I went to my first Dallas Black Hawks games at Fair Park Coliseum, which was used for livestock exhibitions during the State Fair. This, early-season games had a distinct aroma (you can't beat the combination of cross-checks and cow manure - just ask Bruce Boudreau, Randy Carlyle or Ron Wilson). The first NHL game I attended was the Calgary Flames vs. Colorado Rockies at McNichols Arena in Denver, in 1981. I don't remember the score, but I'll never forget Lanny McDonald's mustache.

I’ve been a New York Rangers fan since ’80, and a Dallas Stars fan since they moved down from Minnesota.  When the Rangers won the Cup in ’94, I was probably the only person in College Station, TX who popped the cork on a bottle of champagne.  Beyond that point, my memory of that evening is a bit fuzzy, but I know it was all good.

After college, I moved back to Dallas and started playing in-line Hockey.  Two years later, I traded wheels for blades and haven’t looked back.  I’ve never been the best player on my team, but I take pride in being a damn good team player.  In my younger days, I typically led my team in Assists and Penalty Minutes, but I’ve evolved into a kinder, gentler player.  Sadly, there’s no Lady Byng trophy for the Beer League.

I hope the fact that I’m both a fan and a player will help me in my quest to convey to readers the excitement, the intensity, the sheer joy of The Great Game, along with cold, hard analysis of each teams’ playoff prospects.  I know the thrill of scoring the game-winning goal, and the f-bomb-inducing pain of a slap shot off the ankle.  I also know when your team is in the playoffs, and when they’re heading for TEE TIME.  Just like Dickie Dunn, I will do my best to “capture the spirit of the thing”, and share it with you.  I’ll put it On Goal – you crash the net and look for the rebound.
